Are Your Reports Investor Worthy?

To quote Wayne’s World, “We're not worthy!”, is how most startups feel when reporting to investors, or potential investors, with their outdated Excel sheets riddled with manual errors. You started your startup on the core belief that your product or service is game changing, and you want the world to know it. But the minute you get in front of an investor you start to second guess yourself and your numbers.

A Precise Look at Performance in Your SaaS Company

There is a reason SaaS has become the dominant approach to business applications: It makes more sense for both the user and the provider. Users get better tools at a lower cost while providers can count on a steady stream of revenue and closer client relations.

The only downside of running a dynamic SaaS company is that performance is hard to track and difficult to define. Success and failure are driven by multiple variables, and it’s easy to mistake positives for negatives and vice versa.

How is GAAP Accounting Like Baseball Statistics?

The relationship between baseball and accounting is not immediately obvious until you consider how detail-oriented both are. Baseball relies on a byzantine set of statistics; Accounting focuses on a dizzying array of figures. Success or failure is evident through metrics alone.

Beyond GAAP: Making the Most of Your Strategic Advantage

GAAP still has a role to play in financial reporting, but it's no longer the most important set of metrics for today's businesses. For today's forward-thinking CFOs, the real work involves looking beyond finance to facilitate every strategic advantage possible.

A strict focus on GAAP is necessary for regulatory compliance, but in the larger scheme of things it's just one responsibility for finance departments to manage. And, increasingly, it's become a responsibility that requires minimal input and oversight. Many financial applications have made GAAP adherence almost automatic. That means companies need to look beyond basic accounting functions to give themselves a competitive edge.

Managing SaaS Metrics throughout the Company Growth Lifecycle

Fast growth requires fast decisions made with the right information. All companies struggle to do this. But SaaS companies face more challenges. You construct your metrics reports with data you’ve pulled from disparate applications, and then aggregate that data and perform calculations within spreadsheets—typically a time-consuming, error-prone process.

What if you could easily capture and instantly access the detailed metrics you need, right when you need them? What if these metrics shed light on the pitfalls and opportunities ahead, as well as the root causes of performance trends?

KPI Discussion Continued: The Balanced Scorecard (BSC)

This article is a continuation of our series of articles on KPIs. In the last installment, we gave an overview of David Parmenter's explanation of Key Results Indicators (KRIs), Performance Indicators (PIs), and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). In his book, Key Performance Indicators (KPI): Developing, Implementing, and Using Winning KPIs, Parmenter goes on to describe the creation of a Balanced Scorecard (BSC) to help track the execution of the activities necessary to increase performance via modifying an organizations KPIs.

The 7 Characteristics of a KPI

We've started a series of posts about KPIs (here and here) in an effort to shed more light on the subject. In the process, we've gotten some great feedback via comments and done some more digging to discover that there is a broad range of information on KPIs, as well as some disagreement about how they should be approached.
